My name is Amy Lees-Doherty. I am a gold and silversmith, artist, and craftsperson based in Melbourne.
Art has been a profound source of joy and identity for me, shaping who I am, both personally and professionally. Growing up in a creative family, I was fortunate to be surrounded by unwavering support and encouragement that nurtured my artistic passions. Their belief in me provided a solid foundation, allowing me to explore and express myself with freedom and excitement. This deep-rooted connection to creativity continues to inspire and fulfil me, guiding every step of my artistic journey.
My artistic journey began professionally with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art: Object-Based Practice (Gold and Silversmithing) with Distinction, followed by a postgraduate Honours degree in Contemporary Art, both from RMIT. During this time, I found myself weaving narrative and identity through my work, mostly in the form of wearable art, drawing inspiration from local mythology and folklore.
At the core of my practice is a commitment to quality and environmental sustainability. I constantly explore new techniques and methods, driven by a passion for continuous innovation and education. Each piece I create reflects a love for exploration and learning, pushing the boundaries of traditional craft while staying grounded in the stories that inspire me.
My artistic path includes a variety of exhibitions and installations, from the recent "Re-PLAY" at Mycelium Studios to private murals. My work has also been featured in online exhibitions and galleries, such as Craft Victoria’s "The Meaning of Things."
Residencies have played a pivotal role in my development, immersing me in diverse environments and artistic communities. Recent residencies include the Magnify Artists in Residence Programme in Mordialloc and the MERZ Stained Glass Course in Scotland, as well as experiences in Finland and Lake Macquarie. Each residency enriches my practice, offering fresh perspectives and creative challenges.
Beyond my artistic endeavours, I love to be involved in the art community. I’ve facilitated projects with the Blacksmiths Festival Association, taught art classes during my residencies and conducted educational demonstrations, sharing my passion for gold and silversmithing and contemporary art.
My artwork has found homes in private collections across Australia and England. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my creations not only reflect my craftsmanship and stories but also become a meaningful part of others’ lives, spanning continents.
